Using Coin Silver to Make Silver Flatware

Over the years silver has been recycled and refined in a variety of ways. Even the most complicated and ornate object that is made of silver can be melted down to create something new. Silver is used over and over again. It is entirely possible that the silver in your house is made of silver that was once owned by royalty..
When you decide to sell silver, you are putting in back in the cycle again. Some people sell silver and let it go, while others decide to recycle and reuse their own silver.

For example, did you know that some people also found ways to ‘trade up’ with their silver? Even today some families have silver pieces that were handed down and bear the telltale signs that rather then recycle a large piece of silver into smaller things, sometimes people amass small pieces of silver to create something bigger.

“Coin silver” was the name given to silver flatware that was made from silver coins. This was a common practice around 200 years ago. If a family found that they needed a silver object for everyday use, such as a silver spoon or a silver teapot, they would take a bag of silver coins to a silversmith. Then they would ask the silversmith to fashion them the silver object that they desired out of these coins. The enlargement of a family through marriage or birth was an occasion to pay a visit to the silversmith. These days we can easily obtain entire sets of silver flatware with ease, but as coin silver proves, this was not always the case.

Those in the know can look at a something made of silver and spot some signs that it may have been made from silver coins. Some silversmiths were more careful that others, so it is possible that traces of the silver coin design may be evident in an object of coin silver.

You can also trade up with your silver, but you are not obliged to have silver coins, odd pieces of silver flatware or old silver jewelry made into a silver teapot. No, instead you can gather together your silver, sell it to a silver buyer and get cash for silver. Of course you need not have tons and tons of silver; you can sell a few silver objects and still reap the benefits of getting instant cash for silver.

The Ruby Sippers Started Out As Silver Slippers

December 27, 2008 by Sam Errama

It is cool to hear the inside stories and get to know the secrets behind beloved films. For example, did you know that the famous ruby slippers that Dorothy uses to click her heels and get back home in the movie “The Wizard of Oz” were not originally ruby red? This should not be too surprising, after all any film that is based on a book has to go through some changes before it hits the screen. In fact the novel written by L. Frank Baum is actually called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy sets off to look for a pair of silver slippers. How did the slippers go from silver to ruby, seeing as how the two things are very different? Well, The Wizard of Oz was made at the time when the people making movies were very excited about the possibilities available to them because of Technicolor. In order to take full advantage of the Technicolor process, the film makers thought it would be better to make sure that the coveted slippers that Dorothy sought really popped. So they discarded the silver slippers in favor of ruby ones. People who have seen the movie and know little about L. Frank Baum’s original book usually have know idea that the precious slippers that Dorothy thought would help her get home were silver in the original story.

In your own story, you may find that silver can still save the day and help you meet your goals and get where you want to go. Silver is quite valuable, even if the makers of the The Wizard of Oz movie saw fit to replace it with another gem for the sake of making the slippers stand out. You can sell silver and let a silver buyer replace your silver with spending power when they give you cash for silver. You probably do not have any silver slippers, but you likely have silver earrings, silver necklaces, silver cuff links, a silver watch, silver flatware, sterling silver objects, silver candle holders and silver statuettes. And just think, you will not even have to go as far as the Emerald City or undertake an epic journey to get this cash for silver. When you go online to contact a silver buyer, you can get a postage paid envelope and send your silver in without going very far at all.

Cash for Silver: One of Our Favorite Things

December 25, 2008 by Sam Errama

It has never really been clear how, but “My Favorite Things,” a song from the musical The Sound of Music has somehow become part of the Christmas canon. This song manages to take what could be just a list of preferences and makes it poetic.

This song the lists some of the singer’s favorite things really could be appropriate any time of year, but many artists include it on their Christmas albums. It also gets sung during Christmas concerts as well. In the movie, The Sound of Music, it certainly is not winter when the song is sung. However, the lyrics do mention one of the hallmarks of winter (at least winter in a cold climate) and that is “silver white winters that melt into springs.”

As I am originally from a cold climate, I can tell you that the vision of “silver white” winters is much more the ideal than reality. Snow does look silver white when it first falls, but after a while, after people have been out walking around on it  and driving in it, the snow tends to loose its silver glow. Still, it does look lovely and silvery when it first falls and of course that is the part that is captured in the song.

Unlike the silver white snow that hits the ground and gets trudged upon, the silver jewelry and other silver objects you have are not likely to be walked or driven on, so they probably still have some of their original glow. When the silver white snow melts in the song, it turns into a much welcomed spring. And when you sell silver to a silver refiner, it can be melted down to bring you some very much wanted cash for silver.

There is a season for everything—there is a time for the silver white snow to be on display and a time when it has to melt. The same goes for your  old silver. There was a time when you had large dinners that required the use of a lot of silver flatware, but if those days are over, then why not sell your unused silver flatware? Or if some of your silver jewelry has already seen its best days or is no longer in style, you can sell it and get instant cash for silver. Cash is always in style and no doubt, is one of your favorite things.

Scientists Turn Silver Foxes into Pets

December 23, 2008 by Sam Errama

The term “silver fox” is often used when referring to senior citizens and it is used in a funny, ironic way. The term silver fox is used to indicate that just because you have reached a certain age, this does not mean that you are ready to throw in the towel. Instead, silver foxes are out there living life to the fullest and enjoying themselves. Silver foxes are not tame at all…or are they?

In contrast to the term silver fox in its use to describe fun and feisty seniors, the tame silver foxes of Russia are just that: tame. It has taken almost fifty years for this to happen, but scientists in Russia have domesticated the silver fox.

The silver foxes, once wild and unafraid to show their teeth, have now taken on the personality traits of your average domesticated dog. Some of the changes that these newly tame silver foxes went through were that they: become increasingly friendlier to human beings, started to wag their tails to indicate happiness, started to bark as dogs are prone to do and they list their musky fox scent.

Some of the funds to keep the project of domesticating silver foxes came from selling the silver foxes as pets, but towards that end of the 1990s the were having some financial difficulty.

Still, it is quite amazing to think that a team of scientists worked for years to take the wild silver fox and turn it into the kind of animal you would welcome into your house as a pet. It must have taken quite a lot of work to take a creature like the silver fox and turn it into an animal that behaves like a dog.

Maybe you know of some other amazing experiments involving not silver foxes, but silver itself…Did you know that a silver refiner can take you silver objects–silver jewelry, sterling silver flatware or silver coins–and turn it into cash for silver? And here is the best part—it will not take fifty years worth of experimenting to make this happen.

You will not have to brave the cold of a Russian winter or even the cold of a winter in your neck of the woods either. You can contact a silver buyer online and they will send you a postage paid envelope. Put your silver objects into the envelope and send your silver in to be evaluated and the silver buyer will give you instant cash for silver.

One is silver and the other is gold

December 20, 2008 by Sam Errama

If you ever attended camp, be it summer camp, scout camp or even band camp, you may remember sitting around the campfire singing songs. In particular, you may remember a song that advised you try to gain new friends, but not to forget the friend you already had.

The lyrics to the first verse of that song were:

Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.

Of course I assumed that the new friends were silver and the old friends were gold. Because often when people are ranking metals, silver takes second place to gold. And I imagined that the song was saying that as great as new friends are, you have not spent enough time with these new friends for them to really prove their worth, so the yearned the designation of silver. Meanwhile, you old friends were tried and true, or else they would not still be your friends, right? Since they had stood the test of time, your old friends were as good as gold.

But who is to say, really? After all, song lyrics, like poetry, are open to interpretation. Based on the order it seems as if new=silver and old=gold, but you can think of it any way you want.

When I actually looked up the lyrics, I found that there was another verse that declared that lasting value of both gold and silver. We rarely sang the entire song, so I did not know about the other verses. The later verse I refer to goes like this:

Silver is precious, Gold is too. I am precious and so are you.

Now in that verse, silver and gold seem to be on equal footing, since both are thought to be precious. In fact, since silver is named first and gold is added later as being precious “too,” perhaps it is really silver that the songwriter valued. Who can really say? After all if “you” and “I” are equally precious, who is to say that we cannot view gold and silver as being on the same level when it comes to value.

You cannot put a value on friendship, really. But you can ascertain the value of both gold and silver, especially if you are looking to sell silver or sell gold. You can check out www.kitco.com to get more information about the market price of silver. Another site with valuable information about thee market value of precious metals is www.thebulliondesk.com.
